With more people working from home these days, many have converted an extra bedroom into an office. Having a dedicated workspace can help motivate you to work efficiently from home.

Of course, now you have one less bedroom. It’s handy to have a guest room to accommodate visitors from time to time. But how do you fit a bed in your home office? There are solutions that allow you to use that room as an office during the day and a bedroom at night.

Sofa Bed

If you’ve got the space for it, a sofa bed is an excellent option. While folded up, these pieces of furniture are comfortable couches that come in many styles and colors to fit your office decor. A classic black leather suits most home offices. You can sit on it when taking a break from work. When you need an extra bed, simply fold it out, grab some pillows and bedding, and you’ve got a comfy spot for a guest to bed down for the night.

Daybed

If you are short on space, a daybed might be just what you need. Smaller and lighter than a sofa bed, these pieces of furniture have side pieces that function as a head and footboard and a back that allows you to sit on them like a sofa. With some soft sheets, cushy pillows, and warm blankets, the daybed becomes a nice place for a guest to take a snooze. Add a few small cushions to style it up during the day.

Futon

Another space-saving option is a futon. A traditional Japanese type of bedding, in its pure form, a futon is a small mattress that lies on the floor for sleeping. But you can buy them with a folding frame. One side can be placed upright to form the back of a couch. At night, fold it down for a cozy bed for overnight guests. Futons are generally less expensive than sofa beds and they are lightweight and easy to move.

Murphy Bed

Although much less common than other office beds, if you have the wall space, you can have a Murphy bed installed. You’ve probably seen these in old movies. This kind of bed folds out of a wall to lie flat. It has a mattress that you can make up just like any other bed. When not in use, fold it up and it takes up no space at all in the room. It is one of the most convenient beds there is.

Folding Cot

The least comfortable, yet inexpensive option that can be stored in a closet is a folding cot. They tend to be narrow with thin mattresses but they will do in a pinch if you are tight on space and have a limited budget. Dress them up with fluffy pillows and blankets and they make a pretty good place to sleep. They come with wooden or metal frames so you can choose one that suits your tastes and sense of style.

Having a home office has its advantages, especially if you work remotely. If you still need that room to put up guests sometimes, try one of these options. Depending on your budget and space, you can have a couch by day and a bed by night or have a bed that stores out of the way.
