When considering an Italian kitchen, one typically envisions a large, luxurious cooking area. However, with interior design and architecture improvements, Italian kitchen designs have transformed. Now, they focus on creating a spacious, organised, and uncluttered look no matter the size. Sudeshna Guha, Associate Studio Manager – Design at Design Cafe, shares some ideas for replicating the Italian style kitchen in Indian homes. These concepts are highly practical, aesthetically pleasing, and can be implemented in even the smallest of kitchens.

1. Open the Kitchen for a Neat Look

Italian kitchens are sought after for their tidy, organised appearance and their focus on unencumbered surfaces. If you require an Italian kitchen design for a small area, opt for an open kitchen layout with a modular set up instead of a traditional closed kitchen. This will make your kitchen look more spacious and airy. Additionally, a chimney can be installed to keep it clean and smoke-free. You can also take advantage of storage options like magic corner units, tandem drawers, janitor units, and skirting drawers to optimise the storage space.

2. Foldable Breakfast Counter

To reduce clutter, design your space according to your needs and get rid of unnecessary items. This is the basis of Italian modern kitchen design. If your family is living in a compact apartment, you can get a foldable breakfast counter with concealed storage. This will upgrade your kitchen’s functionality without taking up too much space. It is a great alternative to bulky dining tables which take up a lot of space.

3. Appliance Garage to Keep Countertops Clutter-Free

In India, appliances/gadgets like microwaves, grills, and toasters are usually placed on the kitchen counter, taking up a lot of space. Italian kitchen design encourages keeping the counters as clear as possible for cooking. An appliance garage is a great way to attain a clean counter. This unit is compact and organises all your appliances in one place.

4. Different Drawers, Pull-Outs, and Shutters

The main reason why Italian kitchen design is popular is due to its emphasis on efficient use of space to provide maximum storage and a smooth cooking experience. So opt for modern and efficient storage options like oil pull-outs, spice pull-outs, pantry pull-outs, carousel units, drawers with in-built organisers, tandem drawers, bi-fold cabinets to keep your kitchen clean and organised.

5. Large Window

A large window is a vital element of Italian kitchen design. Windows let in plenty of natural light and make a room appear bigger. Furthermore, a large window in the kitchen is important for ventilation and keeping the kitchen fresh. Guha suggests using muted colours for the floor and laminate finishes to increase the light reflection.

6. Island Counter

If you have a spacious kitchen, you can add an island countertop. You can install your sink or hob on the island. You can also create a bar unit so that you can entertain guests or have a house party with your friends. You can also add tall chairs to your island countertop to use it as a breakfast counter or a makeshift study counter.

7. Wooden Cabinets

To get a traditional Italian kitchen design, add some natural elements like terracotta flooring, wooden cabinets, and muted colour scheme. For a more modern look, try a combination of wood finished laminates and solid colours. Go for pastel colours if you have a small kitchen. Minimal accents and no unnecessary ornamentation are advised. Terracotta tiles bring in a traditional vibe to the kitchen and are easy to maintain. However, you can opt for white floor tiles, marble, or wooden flooring to modernise your Italian kitchen.
